Fethiye: harbour town of the Turquoise Coast

Fethiye is a real working town on a wide bay full of islands, 45 minutes from Dalaman Airport. It has a lively harbour, a fish market where you choose your fish and have it cooked, Lycian tombs carved into the cliffs above town, and some of Türkiye's best boat trips and beaches within half an hour.

Where to stay around Fethiye

The Fethiye area has four very different bases. Town and Çalış suit people who want a real town; Hisarönü and Ölüdeniz are resort villages over the hill.

Things to do

12 islands boat trip

The classic Fethiye day out: a wooden gulet leaves the harbour in the morning and stops at five or six bays among the islands of Fethiye Bay for swimming, with lunch on board. Calm water and very clear sea; choose a smaller boat if you want to avoid party cruises with loud music.

Amyntas rock tombs

Above the town, the temple-fronted tomb of Amyntas and its neighbours are carved into the cliff face. A short climb up steps from the old quarter, best in the late afternoon light.

Fish market

In the covered market in the centre, you buy fresh fish at the counters in the middle and take it to one of the restaurants around the edge, which cook it for a small fee and serve salads and meze. A Fethiye institution.

Kayaköy

A ghost village of several hundred stone houses on a hillside 8 km from town, abandoned when its Greek population left in the 1923 population exchange. Walk among the roofless houses and churches; a path continues over the hill down to Ölüdeniz in about two hours.

Saklıkent gorge

About 45 minutes inland, a narrow limestone canyon with icy water to wade through. Combine it with the ancient city of Tlos on the way. Wear shoes that can get wet.

The Lycian Way

Türkiye's most famous long-distance trail starts at Ovacık near Fethiye and runs over 500 km to Antalya. The first stages, above Ölüdeniz and Butterfly Valley to Faralya, are among the most spectacular and make excellent day hikes.

Getting there and around

Dalaman Airport is 50 km away, about 45 minutes through the Göcek tunnel; see the Dalaman to Fethiye transfer guide. Dolmuş minibuses run constantly from the town to Çalış, Hisarönü, Ölüdeniz and Kayaköy. Water taxis cross the bay from the harbour to Çalış in summer. For Kalkan, Kaş and the coast further east, see our Kalkan and Kaş guides.

When to go

May to October for swimming and boat trips, with June and September ideal. Fethiye is a year-round town, so spring and autumn are excellent for hiking the Lycian Way. See our weather guide for monthly figures; Fethiye is similar to Antalya with slightly cooler winters.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fethiye or Ölüdeniz better to stay in?

Fethiye town if you want a real town with restaurants, markets and boat trips from the harbour; Ölüdeniz if you want to step out onto the beach. Hisarönü is in between and the most budget-friendly.

Does Fethiye have a beach?

Not in the town itself. Çalış beach is 5 km north, and Ölüdeniz, Kıdrak and the island bays on the boat trip are all within half an hour.

Which airport is closest to Fethiye?

Dalaman (DLM), about 45 minutes. Antalya is about 3.5 to 4 hours away.

Is the 12 islands boat trip worth it?

Yes, it is the best way to see Fethiye Bay. Choose a quieter boat if you prefer swimming stops to music and foam parties.
