Hisarönü: the lively village above Ölüdeniz

Hisarönü sits on the hill about 5 km above Ölüdeniz, ten minutes down to the beach by dolmuş. It is one of the most popular resorts in Türkiye with British visitors: apartments, villas with private pools, a busy high street of bars and restaurants, and generally lower prices than the beachfront.

Hisarönü, Ovacık or Ölüdeniz?

Hisarönü and its neighbour Ovacık run into each other along the road from Fethiye to Ölüdeniz. Neither has a beach; the trade-off is more choice, livelier evenings and better value than staying by the sea.

Things to do

Hisarönü high street

The heart of the village is a strip of bars, restaurants, shops and late-night venues that fills up after dark in summer. Expect English breakfasts, quiz nights and live sport alongside Turkish grills. It is busy and loud in July and August; stay a few streets back or in Ovacık if you want to sleep early.

Ölüdeniz and the Blue Lagoon

The beach is ten minutes away by dolmuş, which runs every few minutes in season. From the beach, boats go to Butterfly Valley and the bays along the coast, and tandem paragliders land after gliding down from Babadağ. See our Ölüdeniz guide.

Kayaköy ghost village

The abandoned Greek village of Kayaköy lies just over the hill. You can walk there from Hisarönü in under an hour on a quiet road and path, and continue on the waymarked trail down to Ölüdeniz. Take water and avoid the midday heat.

Lycian Way

The Lycian Way starts close by, above Ölüdeniz. Even a few hours on the first stretch towards Faralya gives wide views over the lagoon. Most visitors do short sections rather than the whole route.

Getting there and around

Dalaman Airport is around 55 minutes away; see the Dalaman Airport to Hisarönü transfer guide and all Dalaman transfers. Dolmuş minibuses link Hisarönü with Ovacık, Ölüdeniz and Fethiye town frequently in summer, until late at night. Fethiye's harbour and boat trips are about 20 minutes away; see our Fethiye guide.

When to go

May to October. June and September are warm with fewer crowds; July and August are hot and Hisarönü is at its liveliest. Much of the village winds down from November to April. See weather by month and plan costs with our holiday budget calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Hisarönü from Ölüdeniz beach?

About 5 km, roughly ten minutes by dolmuş or taxi. Walking down is possible but steep and along the road, so most people take the dolmuş.

Is Hisarönü cheaper than Ölüdeniz?

Generally yes. Apartments, villas and meals tend to cost less than on the beachfront, and the choice is much wider.

Is Hisarönü good for families?

Yes, especially villas with pools in Ovacık or on the edges of Hisarönü. The centre can be noisy late at night in peak season.

Hisarönü or Fethiye?

Hisarönü is a holiday village close to the beach at Ölüdeniz; Fethiye is a real town with a harbour, market and boat trips. Compare in Fethiye or Ölüdeniz.
