Kalkan: villas, rooftops and Patara beach

Kalkan is a former Greek fishing village of white houses climbing a hillside above a small harbour, now known for villas with infinity pools, rooftop restaurants and long-staying British visitors. It is quieter and more upmarket than Fethiye, and close to two of the coast's best sights: Patara beach and Kaputaş.

Where to stay in Kalkan

Most visitors rent a villa with a pool; hotels are small. The town is steep, so location matters if you want to walk.

Things to do

Patara beach

About 20 minutes away, Patara is one of the longest sandy beaches in Türkiye, around 18 km of dunes with no buildings because it is a national park and a nesting site for sea turtles. It is reached through the ancient city of Patara, with a theatre and a restored parliament building of the Lycian League. Entry fee; the beach closes at dusk.

Kaputaş beach

Seven kilometres east towards Kaş, a small cove of fine pebbles and bright turquoise water sits at the foot of a gorge, reached by steps from the road. Spectacular but small; go early in summer.

Kalkan beach clubs

Kalkan's own coast is rocky, so most swimming happens at beach clubs with platforms and sunbeds, many with free boat shuttles from the harbour. Kalkan's small town beach is pebbly.

Xanthos and Letoon

Two UNESCO World Heritage sites lie 30 minutes inland: Xanthos, once the capital of Lycia, with pillar tombs and a theatre, and Letoon, its sanctuary of Leto. Quiet, often almost empty.

Saklıkent gorge

About 45 minutes away, a narrow limestone gorge with ice-cold water to wade through, and riverside restaurants at the entrance. Wear shoes that can get wet. Bring your own if you do not want to rent plastic shoes.

Kaş

Kaş is 30 minutes east for a livelier evening, diving and the Kekova boat trips; see our Kaş guide.

Getting there

Fly into Dalaman (DLM) if you can: about 120 km and 1 hour 45 minutes to Kalkan. From Antalya (AYT) it is about 215 km and 3.5 hours. Pre-booked transfers are the norm because many villas are up steep lanes; drivers need the exact address. Dolmuş minibuses connect Kalkan with Kaş, Patara and Fethiye.

When to go

May to October. June and September are ideal; July and August are hot but cooled by the evening breeze on the hillside. Many restaurants close from November to March. See our weather guide.
