Dalyan: river village of rock tombs and turtles

Dalyan is a laid-back village on a slow river that winds through reed beds to the sea. Across the water, royal tombs of ancient Kaunos are carved into the cliff; at the river mouth, İztuzu beach is one of the most important nesting sites for loggerhead turtles in the Mediterranean. Just 35 minutes from Dalaman Airport.

Things to do

Kaunos rock tombs

The temple-fronted tombs of the kings of Kaunos, carved high into the cliff across the river in the 4th century BC, are best seen from the riverbank in the village, especially lit up at night. The ruins of Kaunos itself, with a theatre and harbour, can be visited by boat and a short walk.

İztuzu Turtle Beach

A 4.5 km sand spit between the river and the sea, protected as a nesting site for loggerhead turtles. The beach is open by day and closed at night from May to October; nests are marked. The sea side has gentle waves, the river side warm, still water. A turtle rescue centre at the river end looks after injured turtles.

River boats

Cooperative boats from the village riverfront are the local transport: to İztuzu beach, to Kaunos, to the mud baths and up to Lake Köyceğiz. A full-day boat tour combines all of them and is the classic Dalyan day.

Mud baths and hot springs

On the river towards Lake Köyceğiz, sulphur mud pools and thermal springs let you cover yourself in mud, dry in the sun and rinse off in warm spring water. Fun rather than luxurious.

Nearby

Göcek and its island boat trips are about 40 minutes east; Fethiye about an hour. See our Göcek and Fethiye guides.

Getting there and around

Dalaman Airport is about 30 km away, roughly 35 minutes via Ortaca; see the transfer guide. In the village you walk or use the river boats; dolmuş minibuses run to İztuzu and to Ortaca on the main road.

When to go

May to October. In June and July you may see turtle tracks on İztuzu in the morning; from late July hatchlings emerge. Spring and autumn are lovely on the river and less humid. See our weather guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see turtles at İztuzu beach?

Adult turtles nest at night when the beach is closed, so sightings are rare, but tracks and marked nests are common in summer and turtles are often seen in the river. The rescue centre at the river end lets you see turtles up close.

Does Dalyan have a beach?

Not in the village. İztuzu, one of the best beaches on the coast, is 13 km by road or about 40 minutes by river boat.

How far is Dalyan from Dalaman Airport?

About 30 km, around 35 minutes.

Is Dalyan good for families?

Yes. İztuzu's calm river side is ideal for small children, the boat trips are a highlight, and the village is quiet and safe.
